  • What is the digital television transition?
Many full-power broadcast television stations in the United States have stopped analog broadcasting and are broadcasting only in digital. The remaining stations will stop broadcasting analog sometime between now and June 12, 2009. June 12, 2009 is the final deadline for terminating analog broadcasts under legislation passed by Congress. Digital broadcasting provides a clearer picture and more channels and will free up airwaves for use by emergency responders.

  • Will my television work after the transition?
Analog television sets receiving free TV using an antenna will not work after stations in your local area stop analog broadcasting, which will occur no later than June 12, 2009. Television viewers with these sets that are not connected to a pay TV service need to take action now. Most consumers who purchase a converter box today connect it to their existing television and begin enjoying the benefits of digital television immediately.

  • How does Satellite TV Work?
Satellite TV is a means of receiving television signals in a more direct way. Satellite television is essentially a broadcasting service that allows subscribers to receive television signals through a receiver unit, most likely through a satellite dish. These received signals are uploaded to a satellite, and then electronically changed so that unauthorized downloading cannot occur. Those who pay the monthly subscription fee for satellite television receive the unscrambled service and others who do not are not allowed access to this elite service. However, elite doesn't indeed mean more expensive. Compared to that of cable television providers, satellite TV providers give greater quality for a fraction of the price. Satellite TV providers guaranteed quality content as well as an increased number of channels for a lower price. How can you go wrong? Choose DIRECTV or Dish Network today. Both satellite TV providers maintain professional services with happy customers.

  • Why are satellites used for TV broadcast and what do they do?
This is a simplified answer to help you understand. Since the earth is round, you can't transmit a signal across the United States without hitting the planet itself. The satellites are in a geosynchronous orbit, 22,300 miles above the equator. In other words, if the space shuttle puts the satellite over Kansas, the satellite will always remain over Kansas, traveling with the planet. The TV signal is digitally compressed and sent to the satellites, where it is amplified by about 120 watts and then sent back toward the middle of the United States at over 12 GHz. This means you can pick up the signal from anywhere in the country as long as you have a clear view of the satellite. Since trees and other obstructions can block the signal, the "look angle" or exactly where you aim the dish is very important and it depends on where you are located. The azimuth, or East/West angle and the elevation vary a great deal. Basically, those on the East coast aim the dish to the southwest and those on the West coast aim the dish southeast. The further North, the lower the elevation angle. In Texas the look angle would be very close to South and possibly more than 50 degrees elevation. In Maine, the look angle would be somewhere toward the southwest and might be 27 degrees elevation.

  • What does the satellite receiver do?
The receiver receives the information from the dish and LNB and decompresses the digital channels. The output to your TV is either, S-Video, the raw audio video (RCA type connectors) or to either channel 3 or channel 4, if your TV doesn't have the other connectors. Digital Dolby is also available for your home theater sound system on the better Dish Network receivers.

  • How many satellite receivers can I hook to a single dish?
You can connect as many receivers to a single dish as you like. Most satellite systems sold today can accommodate up to two receivers right out of the box. Additional equipment is required to connect more then two receivers. The exact equipment depends on the type of system you have and the actual number of receivers you plan to use. The additional devices you may need are a matrix switch or multi-sat switch. If you wish to connect three or more receivers you need to speak to your local satellite dealer to determine the proper switch for your system.

  • How many televisions can I hook up to a single satellite receiver?
You can connect as many televisions as you like to one receiver, although they will all be watching the same channel. One issue to be aware of is that you will only be able to change channels from the same room that the receiver is located in. Unless, you purchase a unit with a UHF remote.

  • Can I change satellite channels from another room?
UHF remotes can change channels from several rooms away. Even if you don't purchase a receiver with a UHF remote you can purchase remote extenders. Remote extenders provide you the ability to watch TV in the bedroom and change channels on the receiver in the family room. Ask you local satellite dealer or technician about remote extenders.

  • Why do I need a telephone jack for a satellite receiver?
A satellite receiver must be connected to a land based telephone line 24/7 to view Pay-Per-View PPV movies, events and some sports packages. In some cases a full time connection is also required for multiple receiver installations. The telephone line provides the satellite receiver the ability to communicate back to your satellite service provider. When you watch a PPV movie or event the billing information is stored in your receiver. Once a month or so your satellite receiver will call your service provider and upload the billing information. The PPV charge is then added to your monthly invoice. In multiple receiver installations, your service provider may require a phone line connection for receiver location verification. At a random interval your receivers may make a phone call to the service provider. By using caller ID type technology they can verify that all receivers are located at the same residence.

  • What is MPEG4?
MPEG4 is designed to deliver DVD-quality video (MPEG-2) at lower data rates and smaller file sizes. This provides Satellite Programming Carriers, such as DirecTV and Dish Network , the ability to provide more content using the same bandwidth. Signal Security is also increased thereby reducing piracy concerns. MPEG4 also offers increased flexibility in moving media between devices over a multiple of media's. Home video distribution over ethernet is one possible future for Satellite Television in the home. MPEG4 provides a universal standard for manufacturers to design devices that can interact and distribute video and audio like never before.
