Elevation: is the angle above the horizon, and is also expressed in terms of degrees. This is the angle by which the dish must be "tilted Up or Down" in relation to the theoretical horizon, in order to position it precisely for the desired satellite.

Azimuth (Magnetic): is the angle relating to the horizontal positioning of the dish. The angle is expressed in terms of degrees, with North = 0 degrees, South = 180 degrees.  Use your compass to aim dish at that angle.

LNBF Skew: It is important to adjust the LNBF skew for stationary dishes

Intro

Satellite TV is a form of television made possible by communication satellites that orbit the Earth. Compared to technology that relies on buried cable lines or the use of an antenna, it is highly advanced. Due to its vast capabilities, satellite television allows for quick and easy transmission of a wide variety of channels from all around the world.

History

  • In 1962, the first satellite TV was relayed by the Telstar satellite from Europe to North America. Five years later, the Soviet Union launched the first network of satellites that would be used specifically for television called Orbita. While these primitive versions of satellite television were useful for large companies and government agencies, it would be 20 more years before the technology was advanced enough to be practical for consumer use.

    Function

  • How satellite television works is actually quite simple. The company first sends the feeds for each channel from a large satellite dish to various satellites that are orbiting the Earth. Each subscriber has a mini satellite dish, which is normally mounted on the roof or side of the house. When a user wants to view a channel, the dish locates which orbiting satellite has the channel data and begins to read the data. Once the data is received, it is changed by a converter box into a format that is recognizable by the television. This whole process takes place at the speed of light.

    Features

  • Satellite TV offers most of the same features as other options such as cable television. Home users have a wide array of channels to choose from, including many in high definition. Digital video recording (DVR) is a standard feature on many modern converter boxes. Additionally, satellite radio and satellite Internet are add-ons that are made available to those with satellite television. Warranty and service plans are also available.

    Types

  • The two largest satellite TV companies are DirecTV and Dish Network. DirecTV has more than 17 million subscribers in the United States and has been in business since 1990. Dish Network, founded in 1996, has more than 11 million subscribers. Other satellite television providers include Voom and Star Choice.

    Benefits

  • Surveys of current subscribers to satellite TV indicate that the relatively inexpensive price was their biggest draw. Compared to comparable packages from cable television companies, savings of up to 75 percent have been noted. Additional benefits of satellite television include the unmatched number of available channels, a large selection of pay-per-view movies and events, the clarity of digital video and typically free installation.
